I love the spontaneity of watercolors and find it’s a perfect medium for depicting the unpredictability of nature. The idea for putting it on wood started with a beautiful slab of live edge beetle kill pine leaning against a wall in my garage. The blue pattern and grain of the wood reminded me of rugged mountains, so I ran with this idea and painted it in a way to accent the grain without covering up the beauty of the wood. This turned out to be a perfect way to depict the wild, raw nature of my favorite parts of the outdoors.

Each slab has been selected for its unique grain and color. I prefer to let the wood be the star of every piece, incorporating my painting with and around the existing character. After painting, the wood is sealed with several coats of finish, assuring it will last whether it’s displayed inside or out.
